Holding Onto Both Cultures (2012)

Growing Up Asian American 2nd Place (8.5″ x 11″)

Growing up in America as an Asian immigrant wasn’t the easiest thing to do. There are so many differences morally, culturally, even ethically. Some things went against my own upbringing. This competition embodies the Asian heritage while demonstrating the different hardships or wishes that Asian Americans face. In the 2012 competition, the theme was “Bridges,” in celebration of the Golden Gate Bridge’s 75th anniversary. My piece portrays the way I embrace both my Korean and American culture with two hands that hold on to each other, a bridge embed inside. The poppies and Rose of Sharon flowers that surround the two hands represent national pride. I’ll always be grateful to be apart of two different cultures.
